Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about prices, sizes, coverage, access hours, and how reserving works.
How much does a storage unit cost in Portsmouth, VA?
Storage units at Portsmouth Storage Depot start at $55 a month for a 5×5, with 10×10 units currently $75 on our Fall Special (regularly $100) and 10×20 units at $150. Those are the real rates, with no administrative fee, no setup fee, and no security deposit added at move-in.
New move-ins also get their second month free. Rates are month to month, with no long lease.
Do you have any move-in specials?
Yes — your second month is free on any new move-in, and our Fall Special has 10×10 units at $75 a month, down from $100.
The second month is free on purpose, rather than the first. First-month-free deals attract people who move in free and leave; we'd rather reward tenants who actually stay. No coupon code and nothing to claim — it's applied when you move in.
Do I need insurance to rent a storage unit?
Yes — stored contents have to be covered, either by your own homeowner's or renter's policy or by our tenant protection plan.
Check your existing policy first. Many homeowner's and renter's policies already extend some coverage to belongings kept off-site, and if yours does, you can simply show proof of it. If it doesn't, our protection plan covers you and can be added when you move in. Either way, your belongings aren't sitting uninsured.
Are there any hidden fees or deposits?
No. There is no administrative fee, no setup fee, and no security deposit — the monthly rate is what you pay.
If you need a lock, you can buy one from us when you move in, or bring your own. We don't require you to buy ours.
What size storage unit do I need?
Most people storing a one-bedroom apartment's worth of belongings need a 10×10, which holds a couch, a bed, a kitchen table, and roughly fifteen boxes.
Below that, a 5×5 handles a closet's worth and a 5×10 covers a dorm room or studio. Above it, a 10×15 fits a two to three bedroom house and a 10×20 takes a three-bedroom home or a car plus household goods. If you're between two sizes, size up — the difference in rent is smaller than the cost of a second trip. Our size guide walks through each one, or call and describe what you've got.
What are your gate access hours?
The gate is open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM every day, including weekends.
The office is staffed Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you need to speak to a person rather than use your gate code, those are the hours to come by or call (757) 465-9177.
Is the facility secure?
Yes — the property is fenced, entry is through a coded access gate that records every entry and exit, and it's covered by security cameras and lighting across the whole site.
The recorded access log is the part worth understanding. Every gate code that opens the gate is logged with a time, so there's an actual record of who came and went rather than just footage nobody reviews. There's also a manager on site during office hours.
Do you have climate controlled units?
Our units are non-climate-controlled drive-up units, which suits the great majority of what people store.
Furniture, appliances, tools, seasonal gear, business inventory, and household goods all do fine. If you're storing something genuinely sensitive to heat and humidity — a piano, fine art, vinyl records, or certain electronics — call us first and we'll tell you straight whether we're the right fit, rather than take the rental and let you find out later.
Can I drive right up to my storage unit?
Yes. Every unit here is ground level with a roll-up door, so you can back a vehicle or trailer directly to the door and unload.
There are no elevators, no interior corridors, and no hauling things across a building. For anyone moving appliances or furniture without a crew, this is the single biggest difference between an easy afternoon and a miserable one.
Do you have RV, boat, or vehicle parking?
Yes. We rent outdoor parking spaces for RVs, boats, campers, trailers, and work vehicles, starting at $60 a month.
Spaces sit inside the same fenced, gated, camera-covered property as the storage buildings. It's the straightforward answer to an HOA rule about what can sit in your driveway. See vehicle and RV parking for details.
How do I reserve a unit?
You can reserve a unit online in a couple of minutes, and we'll follow up to confirm it and set a time for you to come in.
We reserve rather than rent online on purpose. It means we talk to you before you get a gate code — long enough to make sure the size actually fits what you're storing and to answer anything you want to ask. Reserve a unit, or call (757) 465-9177 and we'll do it over the phone.
How do I pay my storage bill?
You can pay online through your tenant account at any time, or set up autopay so rent comes out automatically each month.
Your account also shows your balance and full payment history. You can also pay in person at the office during business hours. Sign in to your account, or use the same link to register if you've never logged in before — you'll need your gate code and unit number.
How long do I have to rent for?
Rentals are month to month — there's no long-term lease and no minimum term.
Stay a month while you move, or stay for years. Give us notice when you're ready to go and we'll close it out.
