Why security is the whole pitch

You're leaving your things somewhere and walking away

That's the actual transaction. Everything else — the rate, the unit size, how wide the driveway is — only matters if you're comfortable leaving your things behind a gate you don't control.

So here's what's between your unit and the road: a fenced perimeter, a coded access gate that records every entry and exit with a time, cameras across the property, and lighting so the place isn't dark at six in the evening in December. There's a manager here during office hours, not a call center in another state.

The recorded log is the part most people don't think to ask about. Plenty of facilities have cameras. Fewer can tell you exactly which codes opened the gate and when.

What we rent

Drive-up storage, from a closet's worth to a full household

Ten sizes, all ground level with roll-up doors you can back a truck straight to. No elevators, no corridors, no carrying a mattress the length of a building.

We also have a small number of outdoor spaces for RVs, boats, and trailers — only a handful, so call to check.

Getting started

Reserve online, then we'll talk

We reserve rather than rent online on purpose — it means a real conversation before anyone gets a gate code.

Pick your size

Use the size guide, or just call and describe what you've got. We'll tell you honestly which unit fits — including when a smaller one is enough.

Reserve it online

Takes a couple of minutes and holds the unit. Reserve a unit, or call (757) 465-9177 and we'll do it over the phone.

We confirm, then you move in

Someone from the office follows up to confirm the reservation, sort out coverage, and set a time. Then you get your gate code and the unit is yours.

Questions

The things people ask us most

How much does a storage unit cost in Portsmouth, VA?

Storage units at Portsmouth Storage Depot start at $55 a month for a 5×5, with 10×10 units currently $75 on our Fall Special (regularly $100) and 10×20 units at $150. Those are the real rates, with no administrative fee, no setup fee, and no security deposit added at move-in.

New move-ins also get their second month free. Rates are month to month, with no long lease.

Do you have any move-in specials?

Yes — your second month is free on any new move-in, and our Fall Special has 10×10 units at $75 a month, down from $100.

The second month is free on purpose, rather than the first. First-month-free deals attract people who move in free and leave; we'd rather reward tenants who actually stay. No coupon code and nothing to claim — it's applied when you move in.

Do I need insurance to rent a storage unit?

Yes — stored contents have to be covered, either by your own homeowner's or renter's policy or by our tenant protection plan.

Check your existing policy first. Many homeowner's and renter's policies already extend some coverage to belongings kept off-site, and if yours does, you can simply show proof of it. If it doesn't, our protection plan covers you and can be added when you move in. Either way, your belongings aren't sitting uninsured.

Are there any hidden fees or deposits?

No. There is no administrative fee, no setup fee, and no security deposit — the monthly rate is what you pay.

If you need a lock, you can buy one from us when you move in, or bring your own. We don't require you to buy ours.

What size storage unit do I need?

Most people storing a one-bedroom apartment's worth of belongings need a 10×10, which holds a couch, a bed, a kitchen table, and roughly fifteen boxes.

Below that, a 5×5 handles a closet's worth and a 5×10 covers a dorm room or studio. Above it, a 10×15 fits a two to three bedroom house and a 10×20 takes a three-bedroom home or a car plus household goods. If you're between two sizes, size up — the difference in rent is smaller than the cost of a second trip. Our size guide walks through each one, or call and describe what you've got.

What are your gate access hours?

The gate is open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM every day, including weekends.

The office is staffed Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you need to speak to a person rather than use your gate code, those are the hours to come by or call (757) 465-9177.

Come see it before you commit

Drive out, look at the unit, ask whatever you want. No pressure and no hard sell — that's not how a business lasts twenty years in a town this size.
